Bob is a retired gentleman who seems to regard us propeller heads as a cross between alchemists and highwaymen but can’t evade the gnawing feeling that we “May be on to something”.

I’d been telling him about the ire of a guest blogger who was royally ticked with the local newspaper and started blabbing about the crummy service she had been receiving. Read Here

It seemed I may have sparked an idea to help him resolve a developing issue with the local home heating supplier.

Here’s his report of how he used the mention of blogging to assist them in adjusting their attitude.

I just received an invoice from xxxxx Home Comfort for my hot water heater rental.

I have been with xxxxx for several years.

The invoice included an account set up fee of $35. ( because I had moved )

I called them to complain and told them that I had a friend who would blog them to death if they did not cancel the $35 charge.

They waived it immediately.

The London Free Press is conning its customers

Don’t you just love it when ordinary folks can use the internet and tell their story when business’ has treated them shabbily?

Business’ who understand this “Power of The People” can turn complaints around and come out as heroes whereas those who continue to treat customers with indifference are spotlighted for who they really are.

This guest post is as a result of alleged shabby treatment, lies and indifference by The London Free Press in Ontario, Canada.

The London Free Press is conning its customers and advertisers by not delivering newspapers and advertising materials as promised, lying to them and stealing their money.

One year subscriptions are ordered (and paid for in advance. … $253.65) but The London Free Press are ignoring their part of the bargain and not delivering as promised.

Several times each week we have to call and request our newspaper and are frequently told about a “Temporary production issue”.

Temporary production issue my eye. ….. This is outright theft. … Friends across the street receive their newspaper.

The reason for publishing these gripes is because we are repeatedly lied to about production problems and the promise of a newspaper and/or a call from the circulation manager are outright lies because neither materialize.

The London Free Press can either …

A. Continue to steal from subscribers and advertisers and continue to be regarded as thieves

B. Refund my subscription, continue to deliver my newspaper and demonstrate that “We’re sorry” really means something.

Either way. …. Updates on this issue will continue to be posted. … It’s up to The London Free Press what is posted.

P.S. The delivery person even had the nerve to deliver a “May your season be Merry & Bright” card with his telephone number. (Also unanswered).

I’d recently discovered that we may get more value from our vitamin supplements by staggering the dosage.

The idea of chopping pills in half on the kitchen counter didn’t have much appeal so I inquired at Shoppers Drug dispensary about pill splitters.

The assistant inquired if I purchased prescriptions from them and sensing an advantage; I immediately asked “WHY”?

Seems they have them for sale $8.95 but have a freebie for customers. … Of course I’m a customer.

Give it a try.

Another reason I love living on Toronto’s Lakeshore.

Ten Reasons Trick-Or-Treating is Better Than SEX:

Number 10. You’re guaranteed to get at least a little something in the sack.

Number 9. Once you’ve done it, you don’t have to wait an hour to do it again.

Number 8. The uglier you look, the more likely you’ll get some.

Number 7. You don’t have to make small talk with the person who gave you the treat.

Number 6. The person giving it to you isn’t fantasizing that you are someone else.

Number 5. If you get a stomach ache, it won’t last for 9 months.

Number 4. If you wear a mask, no one thinks you’re kinky.

Number 3. It doesn’t matter if the kids hear you moaning and groaning.

Number 2. The next day you don’t have to call the person that gave it to you.

And the Number 1 reason trick-or- treating is better than sex…..

An evening with a Wayward Princess.

Cruising on the Wayward Princess.

Owner Norm and I met many years ago as he was starting construction of the Tall Ship Empire Sandy.

Skilled craftsmen were scarce since Toronto isn’t exactly the ship building hub of Ontario and he had to utilize Eastern European craftsmen who frequently evaporated when they qualified for social benefits.

Between labour headaches and financing struggles …. Building his dream was a constant battle for survival but survive he did and now the Tall Ship Empire Sandy is a proud member of Toronto’s lake fleet.

I met Norm again a few years later while waiting to board for an evening lake cruise on The Wayward Princess and noticed the Empire Sandy moored nearby.

I took the opportunity to wander over and congratulate him on his successful completion of the ‘Sandy and during the conversation he mentioned that The ‘Princess was also in their fleet.

It had been a hectic day, I’d skipped lunch, was almost falling over from hunger and prevailed upon Norm for food which I was prepared to pay for. … He said that he would take care of it.

The ship left the dock and no sign of any food so I was resigned to starving until the buffet opened. … I’m thinking “So much for ‘Taking care of it’”

After half an hour the ship returned to dockside and without stopping; A container was hoisted aboard which turned out to be an “Owner’s Banquet” and which soon arrived at our table replete with linen, silver, Chrystal and a feast fit for a King which included a bottle of Champagne.

This wasn’t the usual buffet fare and my astonished buddy Ron was wondering “Where did this come from? .. and What on earth were we going to do with all this food”? …. The answer soon became evident when two svelte ladies stopped by and mused that “That looks gooooood”! … Of course they were invited to join us and Ron and one of these ladies enjoyed an exciting relaionship for many years until she regrettably passed a few years later.

The moral of the story: …. If you’re in Toronto and in a mind for something different, Think about a lake cruise with Captain Norm; Take a look at his fleet. … He knows how to take care of customers and certainly deserves your business. Info Here

Canadians are able to register our telephones on Canada’s National Do Not Call list (DNCL).

When recently registering a couple of cell phones; I was surprised to discover that no identification was required to process my request.

This means that any one can register your phones on the DNCL.

This may not be a big deal for most of us but for those who use the recorded message in their Voice-mail to promote business it could mean some loss in business if numbers have been registered without our authorization.

An impressive transaction with Futureshop

Hi Folks!
A colleague in my Global Resources Group sent me a “Heads Up” on a sale item at Futureshop Canada:   A Dynex 32″ LCD TV, on sale for $299 and since I wasn’t in my home city, when his note arrived;   I didn’t rush over to buy one.

I did drop in a few days later to take a look and “Surprise! Surprise!” they were out of stock and the offer was expiring next day.    I took a 30 day Rain Check and was assured that a Toronto store would honour it.   (Even though the Rain Check plainly said otherwise).

The “Now in stock” call never did arrive.  Later; When in the vicinity of a Toronto branch;   I dropped in to view their stock and try to make this Rain Check stick.

First stop was customer service where I explained to Sadhane that I was planning to use an out of town Rain Check and was checking stock.  I also mentioned that I publish “The Lakeshore Ledger” Community Blog and will be publishing the outcome of this visit.

Sadhane checked inventory and showed a single “Open Box” unit.   She then directed me futher down the hangar to the TV department where I completely floored Ashish with both the out of town Rain Check and mention of the blog.

He managed to get the deal OK’d with the manager and since the unit was not Factory Packaged;   I needed a demo to check it out before purchase.

Poor guy!  I doubt if he has ever jumped through so many hoops to make a sale for which he did not receive credit.

He made several, increasingly stronger, suggestions that I purchase a service contract and it was only when he realized the imminent likelyhood of having his voice raised several octaves that he stopped asking.

Even after jumping through all these hoops;  He packaged the purchase satisfactorily and carried it out for me.

Bottom line to this circus is that I’m very very happy with the way everyone at FutureShop (In both cities). handled this transaction and would not hesitate to give them more opportunities to fill my requirements.

An acquaintance posted on Twitter how she was treated badly by a staffer at one of the national electronics stores. She was so ticked that she blabbed about the experience on twitter and named names.

Her plan now seems to be …. Create a web page describing her experience and show it to the store manager and ask for his comment before blasting the announcement to a couple of million on Twitter. …. If he has any moxie; He’ll turn this unfortunate incident into a positive and make sure her post is favourable to his corporation. … (A $100 gift certificate sounds about right).
