Heading off cash flow challenges.

Filed under: Uncategorized — teddytowncrier @ 1:08 PM

I know no-one here ever encounters any cash flow challenges but as the Christian thing to do this fine Sunday morning …. You may wish to pass this along.

A couple of cash handling tips I’ve discovered …..

An acquaintance posted on Twitter how she was treated badly by a staffer at one of the national electronics stores. She was so ticked that she blabbed about the experience on twitter and named names.

Her plan now seems to be …. Create a web page describing her experience and show it to the store manager and ask for his comment before blasting the announcement to a couple of million on Twitter. …. If he has any moxie; He’ll turn this unfortunate incident into a positive and make sure her post is favourable to his corporation. … (A $100 gift certificate sounds about right).

Discoveries from today’s neighbourhood stroll. April 09-2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — teddytowncrier @ 8:27 PM

Today was a gorgeous sunny day and it jump-started me into a stroll around the neighborhood where I made some fascinating discoveries.

First stop was my local 7-11 store on The Lakeshore just West of Kipling Ave. where I discovered prepaid Mastercards were available in denominations up to $100 and this Mastercard doesn’t seem to be skinning you alive with fees.

I don’t know what built in features and guarantees these cards have but they’re certainly handy for making purchases when our cards are maxed out or you don’t wish your purchase to be displayed on your regular statements.

Additionally …. Not all on-line merchants accept PayPal (Which in Canada; Can take 11 days to process). and these cards would be handy for purchases from these merchants.

NEXT STOP was at the elderly Chinese couple’s hardware store in the adjacent strip mall for a poke around. … These are a delightful couple! … Eager to serve and often a healthy dose of insightful philosophy.

No matter how old they get; Some people never lose their beauty – It gradually moves from their face into their heart.

I purchased a funnel for filling my water storage container. … I now have a silver thermal survival blanket, water, candles, battery powered radio, flashlights, baked beans and a bag of potatoes plus miscellaneous other necessary supplies. ….. Now; When the power goes off I’ll survive OK for a couple of days.

On to Optician, Gordon Prior’s Long Branch Optical.  Another long serving South Etobicoke business.   Optician Gordon has been serving Long Branch since 1972.  He greets everybody with a huge smile and an outstretched hand and don’t even think of leaving his store without having your spectacles adjusted.   It’s just not allowed. Long Branch Optical. 3349 Lakeshore Blvd. Tel: 416-255-0445.  Just west of Tim Horton’s.

Since Majersky Jewelers was just across the street;  I dropped in to say hello to Jarek and drool over his creations.   Jarek is Master Jewelry Craftsman with an easy, infectious laugh and even though I’ve never spent a cent in his store;   He always rolls out the red carpet and makes us feel like returning royalty without any phony subservience.

I’m glad to see that he finally has some classy chairs for husbands to park themselves on while wives are at the showcases investing hubby’s money.

Drop in and see Jarek’s stunning work and if he doesn’t have what you want …. Ask him to make it for you.
MAJERSKY JEWELLERS 3467 Lakeshore W.   416-255-8219 …   (South side one and half blocks West of Tim Hortons).

Final stop was the dollar store next to Shopper’s Drug in New Toronto to pick up a green, accent light bulb for showcasing my silk Ficus tree.   Since I’d made a few purchases from them that should have worked but tuned out to be junk and a waste of money ….. I asked if I could test the bulb and/or could return it, if it didn’t work. …. The owner told me there aren’t any guarantees and wouldn’t be any exchanges & suggested that if I doubted that it may not work … I shouldn’t buy it.

So there’s my afternoon stroll. …. I hoped you picked up a few ideas. … Drop in and see my friends and say hello!.  I know they’ll be pleased to welcome you and you’ll be glad that you did.

I’m privileged to call these towns and villages in South Etobicoke (Mimico, New Toronto and Long Branch). my home. They are the brightest pearls in Toronto’s necklace!

Post your discoveries in the comments box below. I’ll be glad to publish them and give you full credit.

Food safety in Canada …. A few eye-openers.

Filed under: Uncategorized — teddytowncrier @ 8:25 PM

Food safety in Canada …. A few eye-openers.

I’m pleased to note that our Federal Government has announced that New Federal Guidelines are in place to better inform us of the source of the food that we’re purchasing and what the difference between “Product of Canada” and “Made in Canada” really means.

I haven’t read the pertinent acts to determine if this new initiative is real or a re-hash with more holes than a Swiss cheese.

From perfunctory observations; I have noticed that attractively packaged, nationally advertised, frozen vegetables now clearly indicate that they’re a Chinese product even though the TV ads omit any mention of country of origin and seem to convey that the product is European.

Canadian milk is required to be free from ingested milk stimulating hormones and I’d seen the TV spots from The Dairy Farmers of Ontario urging us to look for their logo on Ontario Dairy Products but trying to find cheese bearing this logo in a recent No Frills visit was fruitless.

Let’s take a look at imported meat. …. According to a CBC News Report US exporters can specify which Canadian inspection facility is to be used for inspecting.

I’m not really comfortable about this option being given to foriegn exporters.  The health and safety of Canadian taxpayers should be accommodated rather than the requirements of Foreign Multi-Nationals.    When you arrive at the border. … Do you have the same privilege?  It makes sense to me but …. What do I know. … I’m just a lowly tax payer.

Much of our food is imported and the exporting producers are probably required to adhere to some Canadian health and safety requirements:   Recent alerts prompt me to be vigilant when purchasing and now thoroughly wash all vegetables with a Canadian Natural Fruit and Vegetable Wash before preparing.

Even though we have new food labelling guidelines we need to ask questions and let store management know our preferences.

Be vigilant, folks! …. Glossy ads and TV jingles aren’t always in our best interests.

Visiting Pet Stuff Store is like going back in time.

Filed under: Uncategorized — teddytowncrier @ 7:20 PM

I’d been scooting aroud town picking up a few items to keep body and soul together and dropped into Pet Stuff hoping to find a solution.

I didn’t know Sharon and not being a pet owner I told her I was not likely be a customer.    It didn’t faze Sharon one bit. ….. She couldn’t answer my question but offered to find out and she did call me next day with the exact answer I was seeking.

What a delightful change from being greeted with “Whaaaa?” when trying to give someone my money.

The warm welcome when visiting Pet Stuff makes me feel like I’d entered a time warp back to the days when the storekeeper would put down the telephone and give a customer their full attention.

“CUSTOMERS ARE NOT AN INTERUPTION OF OUR BUSINESS ….. THEY’RE THE REASON FOR IT!”     Is alive and well at Pet Stuff.

PET STUFF. Everything for your pet’s happiness. … 2965 Lakeshore Blvd. South side of the Lakeshore a few steps west of Islington Ave. Tel: 416-503-0434

Drop in and visit Sharon ; Even if it’s only to say “Hello!”

Is blowing our stack really the answer?

Filed under: Uncategorized — teddytowncrier @ 5:28 PM

Some of us let the drang and sturm of everyday life get to us and I’ve had my share of niggling concerns but I can’t see the value of disrupting my emotional health and demolishing my peace of mind.

My philosophy is to ‘Let it go’ and move on to something more important.

On the other hand there are some who seem to feel that ‘Blowing the Stack’ is the answer.

I received the following from Vince Wright which gives us a couple of interesting perspectives on what blowing off steam really costs us.

A message to all members of MyLinkingPowerForum.com

In my coaching sessions, I make clear to those I’m working with that it’s okay for them to vent to me – privately.

None of us can get through an entire life without venting – nor should we permit ourselves to be cornered into believing that a life without venting is even possible.

Yet, looked at from a certain perspective, venting represents energy – a LOT of energy!

During times when things are challenging us the most, we need the most energy we can get. And remember this: Human energy is finite. (And, too, we use a lot of energy to replenish energy. (Consider, for example, how much energy we expend in finding, preparing, and consuming food.))

So, here’s the thing to think about when it comes to venting.

1. Constructive venting is like a controlled burn – talking things out with trusted friends, writing blogs and posting to forums, reciting poetry, playing a musical instrument, painting, playing board games, exercises such as kick boxing, shadow boxing, calling 211, etc. can be looked at as constructive ways of venting,

2. Negative venting is like an uncontrolled burn – it’s getting out some of the poisonous things inside but at too high a price – yelling, profanity, verbal abuse, physical abuse, intentionally manipulating others to their detriment, self-sabotage can be looked at as negative ways of venting.

So, while venting should be an integral part of your self-management, make sure that your venting is as useful, purposeful, and as constructive as possible…

Thanks, and Keep STRONG!!

I’m proud to live on Toronto’s Lakeshore.

Filed under: Uncategorized — teddytowncrier @ 9:22 PM

It was time to re-stock lunchtime vittles and so; …. I hauled my sweet bippy over to my favourite Tanganykan lady’s delicatessen (Chelsea Bakery at Lakeshore and 3rd St.) to stock up and indulge my sweet tooth.

Next stop was the Mom and Pop cleaners store next door where I intended to have my windbreaker fixed.   Upon seeing a “We’re closing in April” sign on the door; … I sensed that this may not be a Win-Win exercise and after trying to explain “Do you do repairs?” several times I thanked him and proceeded to the donut shop next door to catch up on the local skinny.

The only locals in the coffee shop were Rod of the Rod and Nancy duo and Rod had two guide dogs accompanying him since Nancy was in hospital. ….. Can you imagine the struggle it can be to walk several blocks down a busy street with two guide dogs when each is trained to walk next to his master on the master’s left side?

Since Nancy’s dog (Dawson: A gorgeous, energetic 3 yr old Golden Retriever). was unharnessed, he knew it was “Off duty” time and he certainly conducted himself accordingly by taking every opportunity of fussing up to everyone who stopped by our table,

Rod decided Dawson and Lassiter had been crossing their legs long enough and it was time to take them outside before a coffee shop patron had “a surprise”.

So now I was expected to report to Rod, the very personal, activities of these two darlings because he couldn’t see them.

This was supposed to be a quickie visit to stock up on lunch fixings and certainly didn’t expect to be attending to Fido’s every need.

Soon we were back inside and out of the windy chill when the owner’s wife stopped by our table and announced that her husband was picking up Nancy from the hospital and needed where and how instructions.

The Angels had visited us once again; … I was able to share my blessings of time and computer networking expertise with Rod and Rod was blessed by having the coffee shop’s owner lift the burden of picking up Nancy from the hospital.

Aren’t you proud and glad that you live in such a caring and supportive community?   I am and we would love to hear your story.
